In February, you gained 2 pounds from gobbling down chocolates during Valentine’s Day. No big deal, you think. Then June comes and surrounds you with all-you-can-eat ice cream sundaes. You gain 3.5 pounds, take a deep breath, and forget about your weight.

Next, in November, you celebrate a certain holiday with family, where you can’t resist Mom’s buttery mashed potatoes and Grandma’s cherry pie. Oh no! The scale shows you’ve gained a total of 10 pounds this year. Your eyes widen— how did you get here?

Thinking back, you realize that you hadn’t made any effort to lose the extra weight in February. Since you did not use healthier eating habits or exercise, the pounds kept increasing until you got 10 pounds overweight.

So you decide to lose weight immediately, using better eating habits and regular exercise. One great form of exercise is jogging, “Isn’t jogging boring and old-fashioned?” you wonder.

Actually, jogging has almost always been a great form of exercise. Perhaps you’ve waited at a red light in your car, while a jogger waits to cross the street. Did you notice that the trim and fit jogger wasted no time by running in place, until the traffic light changed to green? Now you can become this determined person.

Another reason to jog has to do with its intensity. Because jogging classifies as a high-intensity exercise, this exercise burns a good number of calories. As you may know, burning calories helps you reach your goal of losing 10 pounds.

Besides burning calories, jogging gives you a fun way to exercise. You can wave “hello” to neighbors, whose sincere smiles provide encouragement. And who can forget the scenery you see while jogging- like a rabbit lurching in the bushes or sunflowers towering upwards. You can take deep breaths and relax while jogging.

You may know that jogging is good exercise, but did you know that jogging is one of the cheapest ways to exercise? Basically, you spend money on running shoes and you’re set. You don’t need special equipment, videos, or membership to a club. But you do need the stamina and the drive to go forward to be a good jogger.

Although jogging can give you a great workout, remember that this weight loss technique puts pressure on your feet and joints. Do yourself a favor and start out with a short distance, like 15-20 minutes around the park. Gradually increase the time you spend on jogging, until you reach an effective distance for your stamina.

Following this gradual method will let your body adjust to jogging, your ticket to losing 10 pounds. And better yet, after you lose the weight, jogging can help you maintain your healthy weight.

It is true that once the weight is reduced and brought down to the desirable level, food intake
must be slightly increased. But see that the intake is not too
much to start increasing the weight once again. To ensure
stability in the weight, make it a practice to weigh yourself once a
week. It is essential that you weigh yourself in the same type of
clothes each time.

Models of Diet
You can loose weight on a diet of 600 calories a day if you are engaged
in sedentary work and on 1200 calories if you are an active working
woman. Distribute the types of food in all your four meals.
Eat what you normally do but less. Look in for the food stuff
which provides the least calories (refer calorie chart for common
cooked or Processed Foods given earlier in this section), but include
all the fundamental food requirements to complete the calories.

I. The following slimming diet provides about 600 calorie food per day :
(A) Early Morning: One glass of warm water with 1 tsp of lemon juice.

(B) Morning Breakfast : Any one or two of the following items :
1.One cup of tea or coffee with a little milk (use artificial sweetness
instead of sugar).
2.Any small fruit (except banana or mango).
3.Two or three small tomatoes or cucumbers.
4.Non-vegetarians can take an egg.

(C)Mid-Day Meal :
1. Two or three small tomatoes or cucumbers :
2. One small chapati.
3. Half bowl of any calorie vegetable.
4. Half bowl of moong soup.
5. Non-vegetarians can take a small piece of meat
(fatless) or fish.

(D) Afternoon tea/early evening: As per the morning
breakfast.

(E) Super : As per the mid-day meal, except for the
fact that a small bowlful of rice or khichree can be taken instead of
rice.

II. The following slimming diet provides about 1,200 calorie food per
day :

(A) Early Morning: One glass of warm water with 1 tsp
of lemon juice.

(B) Morning Breakfast : Take any one or two of the
following items :
1. One cup of milk or one cup of tea or coffee with a little milk (use
artificial sweetener instead of sugar).
2. One small fruit.
3. One Khakra or a slice of bread.
4. One egg.
5. Two or three small tomatoes or cucumbers.

(C) Mid-day Meal:
1. Vegetable or non-vegetarian soup of your liking (Flour should not
beUsed for preparing any soup)
2.Four or five tomatoes or two or three cucumbers.
3.One small bowl of vegetable.
3.Two small chapatis or a slice of bread.
4.One small bowl of moong or any other similar cereal.
5.Non-vegetarians can take some meat (fatless) or a fish.

(D)Afternoon/Early evening: As per the morning breakfast.

(E) Supper: As per the mid-day meal except for the fact that one small
bowl of khichree or rice can be taken as a substitute for chapattis or
bread.

III. Substitute foods:
1.Grains Following are the substitutes of 30 gm rice.
30 gm of wheat flour
30 gm of ragi/vari/sago
30 gm of jowar
30 gm of rice flakes (poha)
30 gm of bajra
30 gm of puffed rice (kurmura)

2.Cereals
Following are the substitutes of 30 gm red gram dal (Tuvar dal)
30 gm of black gram dal
30 gm of moong/moong dal
30 gm of lentil/lentil dal
30 gm of field bean/field bean dal
30 gm of dry peas

3.Fats
Following are the substitutes of one teaspoon of vegetable oil
One spoon of butter
One spoon of ghee (pure)
One spoon of cream
One spoon of ghee (vegetable)

4.Bread-Biscuits Etc.
Following are the substitutes of a small bread (30 gm) :
Two small khakras
One and a half cup dhani
Two small chapatis
One cup of popcorn
Two or three small plain biscuits
One small boiled potato
One and a half spoonful of rice.

Overview:

We are growing more and more overweight even as we obsess about our appearance and particularly about staying thin. But this isn’t just a matter of appearances: obesity (weight that is 20% above normal for your height) is thought to contribute to a wide range of health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. As per statistics from the National Institutes of Health, 65% of American adults are considered obese or overweight. This number is up from 33% of adults in 1980, a significant increase in such a short period of time. The overweight problem continues with our children as well. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 30% of children between the ages of 6 and 17 are overweight, up from 15% in the late 1970s. Children who have overweight parents tend to be overweight themselves, and overweight children tend to have weight problems as adults.

Weight loss pills are generally recommended to those people having body mass index (BMI) greater than 30. Each year, weight loss pills (popularly referred as the slimming-pills) worth billions of dollars are sold worldwide. But still the moot question remains: Is it is safe to consume weight loss pills to treat obesity? In the early 90s, prescription weight loss pills like fenfluramine and phentermine were used in combination, called Fen Phen, for losing the excess fat. However, in November 15, 1997 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the withdrawal of fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine, the contents making up Fen Phen, as they were found to cause serious heart valve problems.

Types of Medications:

1.Anti-appetite (anorectic drugs): This group of weight loss pills includes amphetamine, phentermine, fenfluramine etc. Although it is not clear how these medications work, but they are believed to have a direct effect on the satiety center located in the brain, as a result of which, the appetite is suppressed. These drugs may yield some positive results in the beginning, but soon give rise to dangerous side effects. Most of these weight loss pills are banned in United States and Canada.

2.Some weight loss pills like phenformin, metformin etc. work by reducing the sugar-level in the blood. These drugs cause acidosis and problems in the blood circulation system. These medications were banned in United States in 1977.

3.Laxative Drugs: These weight loss pills act in the most unnatural and callous manner, by simply eliminating the foods from the body, in the form of excretion, before it gets absorbed. Patients subjected to these drugs eventually become victims of malnutrition and their gastrointestinal tract becomes feeble and uncontrollable.

4.Diuretics: These medications drain off water and fluids from the body, thereby creating a delusion of weight loss. They have proved to be utterly ineffective in the long term.

5.Other prescription weight loss pills include sibutramine that makes you feel full sooner, and orlistat that prevents the fat calories consumed, from being absorbed in the intestines.

Summary:

Obesity is generally a predicament of the affluent society. It is the result of surplus consumption of sweet and processed foods, accompanied by the lack of adequate physical activity. Thus, the primary cause of obesity is incorrect lifestyle. The conventional approach to weight problems, for instance, focusing on fad diets or weight loss tablets, may leave you with just as much weight and the additional burden of infirmity. Keep in mind, medications cannot substitute dieting and exercise. No matter what the commercials promise - weight loss pills are largely ineffective and can cause serious side effects. Therefore, the use of these drugs in the treatment of obesity is absolutely undesirable.

Detox Diets – The Next Diet Fad

If you have been on the diet front lately, you have probably heard of detox diets. Basically, detox diets are the next big player in the fad diet game. Like Atkins, Southbeach, even the cabbage diet, different detox diets are popping up all over the internet and in bookstores. What exactly are detox diets, do they work, and are detox diets safe?

The premise behind detox diets is that your body is full of toxins, many of which come from the foods you eat. A basic detox diet will have you fast for a certain period of time, which means you will not eat at all. You will then only eat specific foods that are believed to be toxin free, completely refraining from other foods, such as sugar, red meat, wheat, and eggs. Most detox diets also call for a cleansing process during which colonics, or enemas, are used or herbal colon cleansers.

It is important to understand that detox diets are not really designed for weight loss; instead they are to cleanse your body of harmful toxins. The goal should not be to lose weight. Secondly, there is a great deal of controversy over these diets and whether they are safe.

For the most part, the diets are meant to be relatively short term, or at least the most stringent part is. You will only be required to fast and undergo body cleansing for a few days. Anything longer will definitely cause health problems. Fasting for any length of time will cause nutritional deficiencies, fatigue, dehydration, and possibly eating disorders. Likewise, the colon cleansers that are used to rid the body of waste are basically laxatives that can also cause dehydration and nutritional deficiencies if used in excess. So it would seem that you are doing something very dangerous, but because you only do it for a short time, they try to pick out the potential beneficial aspects of it.

While healthy people may be able to go on a detox diet, not have any complications, and potentially even benefit from it, a person that is not at their best should see a doctor before taking part in it. Likewise, children and teenagers should not go on a detox diet because their bodies still need a certain number of calories and fat grams to maintain healthy growth and optimal development. If there is any question, see you doctor before starting any diet plan.
